“Engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical principles to practical ends such as the design, manufacture, and operation of efficient and economical structures, machines, processes, and systems.”
In Bernice Zeldin Schacter, Issues and Dilemmas of Biotechnology: A Reference Guide (1999), 1, citing the American Heritage Dictionary, 2nd College Edition.
We built the bridge, but did we remember what ice and cold do to steel and glass.

Montreal Doors 3

“The man who comes back through the Door in the Wall will never be quite the same as the man who went out. He will be wiser but less sure, happier but less self-satisfied, humbler in acknowledging his ignorance yet better equipped to understand the relationship of words to things, of systematic reasoning to the unfathomable mystery which it tries, forever vainly, to comprehend”
Aldous Huxley, The Doors of Perception

Montreal Stairs 8

A stair can be an extension of a closet.  If you trust your neighbors or neighborhood you can put all kinds of things on a stair, particularly it they are wide enough.   I once had a stair in an apartment that went nowhere, and was a perfect place to serve as a bookshelf.

Winter harvest

corn-in-snow

A cold winter day. The corn reminds me of how the Iroquis planted their corn, with the three sisters, corn, beans and squash. In some areas other Indians would add fish heads to the pile to work as fertilizer for the plants.
