Montreal Stairs 6

montreal-doors-7-2

The unique things about stairs, is that they exist as transitional places. They are not a room, but not, not a room.  You can spend time on stairs, sit on stairs, eat on stairs, run up and down stairs, all things you can do in a room, but stairs have built in chairs to sit on, or think on, or talk to neighbors on.

Summer garden harvest

harbest
A summer harvest from my urban yard. Gardening has been one of my avocations, if it was my career, I would not have a house.  working on community issues and human rights is another area that is both part of my career and an avocation.

Winter fields

winter-snows

The cold and loneliness of this field and image, makes me think of another far more famous field.

“But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead who struggled here have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.” A. Lincoln

Trees and walls

“Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me~
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.
He will not go behind his father’s saying,
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, “Good fences make good neighbors.” ”

Perspective

glass-half-full

Reality is just perception.  We can’t see ultraviolet light. We can only hear certain frequencies.   There could be large ultraviolet creatures standing talking, at frequencies the human ear can’t perceive, right next to you and you would not  be able to see or hear them.

So is this glass half full or half empty?

..

..

Its actually full. It is full of H and O, its just the bottom part has 2 H’s for every O. H2O.

Montreal Stairs 5

“Like drugs and alcohol, stairs take you up and stairs bring you down. Stairs are neither in one place nor another. They bridge the vertical. Stairs have no allegiance. Stairs live in a private world of the abstruse and mystical. Don’t thrust them. More people die falling down stairs than on airplanes.”
Chloe Thurlow

Faded dreams

memories

“Wooing, wedding, and repenting is as a Scotch jig, a measure, and a cinque-pace: the first suit is hot and hasty like a Scotch jig–and full as fantastical; the wedding, mannerly modest, as a measure, full of state and ancientry; and then comes repentance and with his bad legs falls into the cinque-pace faster and faster, till he sink into his grave.”
William Shakespeare, Much Ado About Nothing

Taken at an Estate sale.  I wonder how long since that dress was worn, what happened to the marriage, what happened  to that couple since those vows were said on that special day sometime long ago.

Part of my Americana series.

Red in January

“She had wandered, without rule or guidance, into a moral wilderness. Her intellect and heart had their home, as it were, in desert places, where she roamed as freely as the wild Indian in his woods. The scarlet letter was her passport into regions where other women dared not tread. Shame, Despair, Solitude! These had been her teachers – stern and wild ones – and they had made her strong, but taught her much amiss.” Chapter XVIII, ‘A Flood of Sunshine’

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
