The reason America has not been attacked in 75 years is not because of the President or Secretary of State, not the CIA or FBI, its because of the US military.  It is due to the 1000s of highly trained men and women who have volunteered to serve and protect our country and the constitution of the United States. They do such a good job that we hardly hear of them, and often forget that they are there, and that 100os of them are currently actively deployed away from the United States protecting all of us. Some of them will be home with their families this Holiday Season, some will not, and will be in places of danger. Some will be flying missions, some will be protecting our coasts, and some will be serving above the water in foreign lands, and others below the waters.  They are the reason we can sleep easily at night.  But they are often forgotten and that is a shame.  This monument in Rochester features a plinth for each of the 5 branches of the military.  Just as we forget our active duiy service members, we forget this monument, or don’t even know it exists.   That is fundamentally wrong,  because in times of war, these young people will not forget us or our constitution.

He calls and says, he has to work late.

The kids are running around, in the muddy backyard.

The dinner is burnt, on that goddam stove.

There’s another letter, from the savings and loan,

The car is out of gas, so I’m stuck here,

With no where else to go.

When we were young, he’d rush home from work.

We’d spend hours just, up in the back bedroom

Dancing and movies, and late night pillow talks

We talked of trips and traveling, and all the places we’d go.

We had all the world, and so so many places to go.

..

The first one came, and everything changed.

She died later that year, and we thought we’d die.

Life goes on, and now there are four.

There’s not enough money, and no no time at all.

We had the whole world, it was in our grasp,

but now, now we have no places to go.

Year ago a friend told me that President Lincoln had been in Rochester and that there was a plaque commemorating that occasion  He acually came through Rochester three times.  The last was on his funeral train.   The train just passed through Rochester, but Buffalo being the much bigger city had the train stop and had a whole funeral procession and parade. So where is this?
